Full Description
As part of the initial investigations on phase 1 of the development, eleven archaeological evaluation trenches were cut along with thirty seven smaller archaeological test pits. The general aims were two-fold. Firstly to map the depth and extent of the topsoil and any coluvium that may be present sealing the underlying 'natural' deposits. The second aim of the field work was to determine whether archaeolgical remains extended beyond mapped cropmarks. No features or deposits were identified as being present. Archaeoloigcal features identified in test pits may represent a medieval settlement previously identified through crop marks. Archaeological features identified in test-pits, not further investigated, appear to represent a medieval settlement previously identified through cropmarks. A metal detector survey was also carried out which recovered a wide range of objects dating from prehistoric flint flakes though to half-cown of Elizabeth 11.
