Full Description
The flint scraper and single ? Iron Age sherd found do not represent any significant contemporary activity in the evaluated area. The buried ground surface presumably represents a small site of ? Late Iron Age date. The leat arrangement predating that shown in 11th century maps is undated but was in use shortly before the latter was erected. The levels suggest that , at this time, the mill was powered only by the Leybourne Stream (1)
Standing remains include a stone-revetted aqueduct, of the post medieval/early modern mill water management system. Documentary and cartographic sources suggest three possible place where an Anglo-Saxon (and earlier?) may have crossed the West Malling Stream One or two monastic fishponds and a mesolithic scraper were picked up during earlier fieldwalking (2,3).
The area was excavated as area 'C' during the 2005 excavation carried out by Wessex Archaeology. Evidence of flooding was recovered in the form of rolled ragstone boulders. Two sherds of late iron age and medieval pottery, worked flint and animal bone was also found.(4,5)
