Monument record TR 36 NE 451 - Rectilinear field system, possibly Roman or Medieval in date, along route of Margate to Weatherless Hill pipeline (Area 3)

Summary

Ninteen ditches/gulllies were recorded in the area. A number of these formed components of a partially preserved rectilinear pattern of land division on a north-east/south-west alignment. These have not been securely dated although elements of the field systems dated to the Romano-British and medieval periods were encountered regularly across the area on a north-west to south-east alignment. Full Description

In area 3-4 of the archaeological investigation area ninteen ditches/gulllies were recorded in the area. A number of these formed components of a partially preserved rectilinear pattern of land division on a noth-south alignment. These have not been securely dated although elements of the field systems dated to the Romano-British and medieval periods were encountered regularly across the area on a north-west to south-east alignment. Many of the minor ditches/gullies crossed the easement at regular intervals and continued beyond the extent of the excavation area. These groups ranged in width from 0.60m - 1m with wide shallow concave profiles and a depth of 0.1-0.3m. (1-3).
