Full Description

Compound 16: Eleven post holes were recorded in the area formed no coherent pattern and were dated to the prehistoric period. Eleven pits were reocrded in this area. In one a complete dog skeleton was located, in another large sherds of pottery had been deliberatly placed which were dated to the Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age. A large number of ditches, dating to the prehistoric, Romano-British and medieval periods, have been recorded. The ditches are boundary and enclosure ditches. Twenty three ditches are dated to the prehistoric period and form part of the landscape. The ditches were locaed at the southern end of the site and generally on a north-west/south-east alignment. Fifteen of the ditches of RB date were concentrated at the north end of the site and are part of the re-working of the same boundaries. The size and depth of the largest of these ditches is broadly similar to those found to the north-east in area 16 and thought to be of similar date. It is possible that both ditches formed defensive boundaries. Only one ditch is dated to the medieval period. It forms part of a rectilinear enclosure that extends beyond the north-eastern side of the egde of the site. Two midden spreads, both appear to have formed within natural hollows, contained large quantaties of Bronze Age pottery (1).
