Full Description
Subterranean passages unearthed during excavations by CAT as part of an archaeological watching brief at the Former Civil Service Sports ground. Originally thought to be deneholes, these features are most likely associated with military activity during WWI and WWII. The site was once part of a vast WWI camp. These passages are most likely practice trenches dug on the site of the camp. Military occupation of the camp contined throuh WWII and a defensive trench was dug at the top of Darland Banks (north of the site). After WWII, the camp was abandoned and only the entrances or collapsed areas of the trenches were filled-in. (1).
