Full Description

Man-made water course with a clay lining which had been deliberately back-filled. Identified with a watercourse on OS map from 1869, which shows that it led directly into the River Thames. Watercourse channel measured at least 9.5m by 4.75 with a depth of over 2.24m. Pit cut into top of channel. Pit measures 3.3m by 4.5m with a depth of 1.2m. Conatined bricke rubble and some pottery fragments dating from 1770 to 1840. Pit thought to have been a 'robber cut' dug to retrieve timbers from channel. Two cesspits discovered at the same level as the channel are probably contemporary in date (C19th). One cess pit had a brick lining. Measures 2m by 1.85m. Other cesspost measures 1.54m by 3.35m. Some tobacco pipes (dating between 1835 and 1870) as well as animal bone and fragments of pottery (dating from 1825-50) were also found in the 'made ground' area. Also Roman pottery sherds ('heavily abraded') of Pathgrove pot dating between AD 42 and AD 200.(1)
