The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. 5272 BETHERSDEN THE STREET (south side) Melville House TQ 9340 21/14 14.2.67 II GV 2. C18. Two storeys red brick. Hipped tiled roof with eaves cornice. Three sashes with glazing bars intact. Doorcase with engaged columns, pediment, segmental fanlight and 6 panel door.

Naval hospital of 1827-28, built to replace the hospital ship Argonaut. It comprised three, three-storey ward blocks and a dispensary and victualling room. From 1905 it was used as a barracks before substantial demolition in the 1960's.
Historic England archive material: BF101410 MELVILLE HOSPITAL, CHATHA RCH01/008/01 Hospital Project: Publication drawings 164 drawings, many of which were used in the publication "English Hospitals 1660-1948: A Survey of their Architecture and Design". All date from the early 1990s and were created by the Royal Commission on the Historical Monuments of England (RCHME). They cover workhouses, military hospitals, specialist hospitals, and asylums throughout England. One exception is the Renkioi Hospital, used as fig.89, which is Turkish. The remaining drawings were unpublished. Some are copies of drawings used in another RCHME publication, 'The Workhouse' (see RCH01/013/01). There is also a set of copies from an unpublished report on Macclesfield Infirmary.
