Full Description

The white Cottage was formerly a listed building. An assessment carried out in 2015 suggested that it had been listed in error, however, and that the listing had been intended to apply to the Old Dower House further down Lossenden Lane. The building was therefore de-listed on 15th April 2015.

The assessment suggested that the building was of some interest, however. From the assessment report:

"History

White Cottage appears to date from the later C18 or early C19. It probably was recorded as a cottage or
tenement on the Newenden Tithe award schedule of 1839, but none of these properties are named. It
appears on the 1870 First Edition Ordnance Survey map as an L-shaped structure with a nearby detached
square outbuilding to the north-west, set in a garden with perimeter paths and trees. A small outbuilding is
shown at the north end of the garden. On the 1898 edition the path and trees in the garden have been
removed but there are no other changes. No other changes are recorded on the 1908 edition. Probably in the
mid-C20 the footprint changed to a U shape.

On 9 August 1979 a building identified as The White Cottage, Lossenden Lane, but of two storeys, was listed
at Grade II. In 1986 the U-shape was filled in by an extension and the cottage was refurbished and
re-fenestrated at this date and subsequently.

Details

Cottage of later C18 or early C19 date, extended and refurbished in the mid and later C20.
MATERIALS: weather-boarded over a timber frame on a brick base. The cottage has a hipped tiled roof with
an off-central brick chimneystack.

PLAN: a single-storey cottage, originally of rectangular plan with three rooms off. It has a central
chimneystack and an entrance to the south. By 1870 the east side had been extended to the north by an
L-wing. In the C20 the south wall was extended outwards and a central porch was added. A further room was
added to the north-west replacing an earlier outbuilding and changing the plan to a U-shape. In 1986 the
centre of the U-shape was filled in.

EXTERIOR: the south side has a C20 off-central gabled porch now converted into a window. There are four
C20 wooden or uPVC casement windows. The entrance is now on the east side. The rear elevation has end
hipped roofs and a central flat roof, five uPVC casement windows and a C20 porch on the east side. The
west side is plain.

INTERIOR: the central south room has an C18 tapering brick chimneystack with a wooden bressumer and a
curved mid-C20 brick hearth. The original south wall (now internal) has been removed and is supported on a
vertical reused oak timber. The original north, east and west walls are mainly intact with upright timbers and
diagonal braces of thin scantling and some lath and plaster infill. The roof retains some original rafters. The
northern half of the property is of C20 construction.(1)"
