Full Description
[TQ 75925378] Roman cinerary urns found AD 1834 [TI]. (1) Several Roman cinerary urns (many totally destroyed by the workmen) and a samian patera were found in 1834 in the grounds of Hayle Place, half a mile from Maidstone. (2) An incomplete samian dish form 18/31, potters stamp DOITUS F, "found at Hayle Place," is in store, Maidstone Museum, but no details of its discovery are known. The Charles collection formed part of the KAS collection so it is likely that this item is the piece referred to by Charles (Auth 2). No further information was gained at Hayle Place which is now divided into flats; the find spot is a long established cricket field. (3) Additional bibliography. (4)
