Full Description
Description from record TQ 94 NW 14:
The Calehill House which John Darrel rebuilt temp. Henry IV was demolished in the 18th c. by Phillip Darrel and rebuilt on a slightly different site. Parts of its stone walls together with a fine decorated window from the private chapel remain in a corner of the garden. (1) Noted as 15th c. remains of Calehill House(2). Listed as a manor.(3) TQ. 94154704: In the corner of the garden S.E. of the present Calehill House (a recently converted 17th c. brick stable-block centred TQ 94164714) are the remains of the earlier Calehill Manor House comprising a small rectangular ragstone turret, some ragstone walling, and the end wall of a building containing a double-trefoil- headed light of 14/15th c. date and a small rectangular light. There is insufficient evidence remaining in the building to support Igglesden's suggestion that it was the chapel. All trace of internal divisions &c., has has been destroyed or obscured by gardening & a tennis court, and more recently the building of a stable. The 18th c. Calehill House formerly situated at TQ 94314694 was almost completely demolished c.1953.(4) GPS AO/61/175/7 AO/61/175/8 Turret no longer extant. These are of stone rubble and include a C15 window of 2 cinquefoil- headed lights. In the C18 another house was built by Philip Darell to the south-east (subsequently demolished), and the older building fell into ruins. 5272 LITTLE CHART CALEHILL PARK Calehill House TQ 94 NW 10/141 14.2.67.
