Summary

Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1461 to 1799. This building was originally a college of secular priests, and was founded in the reign of Edward IV and dissolved shortly after 1503. It was later the vicarage. Most of the building was demolished in the 18th century, from which date the west wing of the present building dates. The north wing is timber framed with a plastered infill.

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. 5344 THE CHURCHYARD (East Side) The College TR 0142 NW 1/48 24.9.51. II* GV 2. Founded in the reign of Edward IV as the Vicarage, but moot of this building was demolished in the C18. L-shaped building. The north wing is timber framed with plaster infill. 2 storeys. Tiled roof with eaves cornice. 3 modern casement windows. The west wing dates from the C18. 2 storeys red brick. Cornice and parapet, 3 sashes with glazing bars intact. Painted wooden doorcase with pediment, rusticated pilasters and 6 panel door.
All the items in the Churchyard form a group, together with Nos 51 to 61 (odd) 61A, 63 to 67 (odd). 67A, 69 to 71 (odd). 75 and the rear part of No 75. High Street.

[TR 01054269] The College [NAT] on site of [NAT] COLLEGE (NR) (1)

A secular college was founded at Ashford temp. Edward IV. The foundation was not properly completed and the college was dissolved soon after 1503. (2)

Most of the building was demolished in the C18th from which date the west wing of the present building, in the Churchyard, dates. The north wing is timber framed with a plastered front. (3)

The only visible remains of this College, now the Vicarage, are (i) the heavily restored timber framing of the W face of the N wing, (ii) a stone chimney breast in the NE corner of the same wing and (iii) the fragmentary remains of a stone arch, possibly in situ, between the N side of the N wing and the S side of the adjoining church hall. In the garden there are a number of moulded fragments and the N wall of the vicarage incorporates a stretch of stone walling, flint garretted. (4)

The College, in the south-east corner of the churchyard is a plain C18th red-brick block and a close studded half timbered house with at the left end the jambs of a medieval stone doorway. The Vicarage was built on this side in the reign of Edward IV. (6)

Ashford, St Mary: a secular college, confirmation granted in c.1467. It is said that the foundation was not legally completed. Dissolved soon after 1503. (7)
