The following text is from the original listed building designation:
TR 03 SW BILSINGTON NEWCHURCH ROAD (west side) 6/72 The Cosway Monument 27.11.57 II Obelisk. Erected 1835 by George Cooper. Ashlar. Simple, tall obelisk on pedestal. The north side bears a tablet inscribed: As a tribute of respect to the memory of Sir William Richard Cosway. Kt. this monument was erected by his friends and the reformers of East Kent in the year 1835. G. Cooper fecit Canterbury. Cosway was killed here in a coaching accident. The obelisk was lightning damaged and the upper sections weathered at time of survey.
