[TQ 72135064] Roman pottery (Maidstone Museum: Acc. No. 4.51) Also the remains of a later building (? Md) (1) Mr. Grove is unable to recollect this site. (2) In c.1936 when a field was being cleared of stones, the stone foundations of a substantial building were found; although not completely uncovered it appeared to measure 15.0m. in length and about 10.0m. in breadth. No details of its construction could be recollected beyond the fact that part of the floor ad been covered with iron slabs some 18" x 9" x 1" and that some glazed tiles were found. There is a scatter of medieval roofing tile about the site (centred TQ 72135064) but no firm dating evidence was found. However,there seems little doubt that it was medieval building although its type is uncertain. In 1951 when the field was put under hops a few sherds of coarse RB pottery were found (now in Maidstone Museum Acc. No. 4.51) in the same general area as the building but to date nothing further has been found. The site lies on a gentle southern slope just above a springhead.
