Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
TR 04 SE BROOK THE STREET (West Side)
4/63 Brook House GV II
House. C15 or earlier, extended and altered late C16. Timber framed plan clad with red brick and tile hung and weatherboarded to right return with plain tiled roof. Four framed bays, hall house plan (originally aisled) with cross-wing. Two storeys with wooden brackets to eaves with hipped roof with gablets and stack cluster to centre left, and stack to end right. Three wooden casements on first floor and 2 long ranges of casements on ground floor with single casement to right. Boarded door to centre left in hipped C20 porch with sidelights. Square porch on right return (formerly a separate cottage). Catslide outshot to rear. Interior evidence suggest original aisled hall, with early C15 jettied crosswing (Dragon beam survives) possible gabled, explaining wooden brackets to eaves. Hall tie-beam with decorative braces and mortice for crown-post. Re-roofed and made 2 storeys with continuous jetty. Late C16 (now underbuilt). Chamfered service doorway heads survive (See Traditional Kent Buildings, Vol. 5).

In 2023 a heritage statement was completed to assess the significance of Brook House and the impact of proposed alterations. The report notes that the phasing of the house over six centuries is now well-understood and that the surviving 15th and 16th century fabric is particularly significant. (2)
