Monument record TQ 75 SW 30 - Possible Roman-British Cemetery, near Barming

Summary

Seven urns found in 1796/7 indicating the presence of a small cremation cemetery possibly connected with the nearby Roman villa site as an early Roman coin was found close by. It is also possible that they may represent a late Iron Age cemetery, but due to the lack of evidence this is far from clear.

Full Description

[Area: TQ 73005420] In the spring of 1797, in grubbing up a hedge in the lane at c quarter mile of the parsonage and nearly half mile E by N from the other cemetery [TQ 75 SW 23] seven Roman urns were found. They were buried near each other and were entire until broken by workmen. Some were black, with rims and others a dull red. When complete they were nearly two feet high and from the quantity of ashes, must have been large. There was part of a man's skull near them and a little further off a great quantity of bones together but without any urn. [Beale Post commenting on the above account by Mark Noble suggests that from the absence of coins etc the urns "might probably have been British".] (1) "Soon after last Christmas or the beginning of spring 1796" at a small distance west of the parsonage, seven Roman urns were found [Mainly sim. infm.] (2) Included in RB. shedule and connected with villa to south [TQ 75 SW 9] (3) Associates find with villa. "In order to be certain of these facts, the writer re-visited Barming .... 1879 on which occasion, he received from ... Mr. Septimus Day, a Roman coin ... Titus which had been found close to the 'Lesser Cemetary'" [i.e. the urn-site] (4) The various discrepancies in date of finding of this cemetery could not be resolved and no further information was obtained to substantiate the find spot given on the current O.S. 25". The site lies in old established orchards. (5)
