Full Description
A grave group, comprising a human skull, a Samian dish and a cinerary urn of black Upchurch ware, was found at a depth of 4 ft. in the chalk, during excavations for a sewer in land near Woodlands Lane Cemetery, Gillingham, which was being developed for housing purposes. The pottery is dated to 1st/early 2nd cent. A.D. (1-2) TQ 7857 6814. The site, in the middle of Sunnymead Avenue, opposite No.99, was pointed out to me on the ground by Mr. P.G. Rhodes, Museum Assistant, Gillingham Museum, who stated that observations were kept in May 1935 when the discoveries were made. The pottery and skull were seen in Gillingham Museum. (3)
