Full Description

A Roman cinerary now containing calcined bones, was unearthed by Payne in 1913 at a depth of 6 ft. in Barnsole Lane, Gillingham. Immediately above was a layer containing burnt earth and animal bones. The discovery was made, originally, by workmen laying a water main. (1) Barnsole Lane, now Barnsole Road, is centred at TQ 781676: Maidstone Museum 6" sites the burial to TQ 7799 6797 but on what evidence or authority is not known. The present whereabouts of the urn was not ascertained. (2)
