The footprint and curtilage of the building was investigated by Oxford Archaeology Unit in 1999 following its dismanting. The building proved to be much older than originally thought. Activity on the site seems to date back to the 13th century, with a possible earlier dwelling dating to this period. A period of abandonment may have occurred before the construction of the cottage in the early 16th century. This consisted of a two-bay cottage around a central chimney stack, with jettied front. This building seems to have made use of reused timbers. The presence of only two bays (rather than three) is unusual. The building was modified in the late 16th century, with some walls being replaced. An extention to the rear of the property was added in the mid 18th century, and a fireplace was added in the back room in the late 18th century. Further small alterations to the floors were made in the 19th century. An extention was added to the north-east corner sometime in the 20th century. (2)
