3/269 Lychgate, side gate and church- yard walls to churchyard of Church of St Mary
GV II
Churchyard walls, gate and lychgate. C17 or earlier and c.1891. Ragstone with red brick and wooden gates/lychgate, in Arts and Crafts Gothic style. The western wall, about 3 feet high, comprised of ragstone with red brick over in English bond, about 50 yards in length. The northern (roadside) wall of ragstone, built of a piece with the gate, to eastern end. Wall about 5 feet high with coping, ramped up to left and to right to return walls. Lychgate on ashlar piers with arcaded timber upper section with arch-braced trussed rafters to shingled roof. Moulded brackets and beams. Wooden gates enriched with carved uprights and carved head finials, with side benches. Iron lampholders attached. Inscriptions, including dedication to Reverend John Philpot, 1837-1891, erected by his sons and daughters. Wooden gate to east, in same style and treatment as Lychgates, with gate piers with cornices and ball finials. Wall returned to east side of churchyard.
