Monument record TQ 76 NE 32 - Romano-British lead coffin burial, Chatham cemetery

Summary

Romano-British lead coffin burial found in 1878 during grave digging in the new cemetery at Chatham. It had previously been enclosed in a wooden coffin, indicated by the presence of several hollow nails. It was dated by Charles Roach Smith to the 4th century; a middle aged male skeleton and and two glass vessels wer found within the coffin. Two yellow ware vessels were found in close association. Previous finds at this location were said to include a number of urns, a bronze fibula and a worn copper coin of Trajan.
