Full Description
Description from record TR 04 SE 9 :
(TR 06634423) Court Lodge (NAT) (TR 06654425, Barn, shown as an unnamed building identified from HHR map). (1) TR 066443. The Court Lodge and the barn, almost certainly C14th, were part of the Desmesne of Christ Church at Brook. In close juxtaposition there remains the church (TR 04 SE 3), the Court Lodge (for the associated moated site see TR 04 SE 7) and the best preserved and most typical of the great aisled barns of Kent. The Court Lodge is not a typical unitary-roofed Kentish Hall but has a separate roof with higher plates for the high-end cross-wing. The Hall is broad but typical enough with a good crown post roof. The barn, which lies SW-NE, is fairly modest in size being 117' x 31'. It shows all the features that remained standard in major Kentish barns for two centuries. Only the splayed scarfs and deep jouls to the posts suggest that it is relatively early (see illus) perhaps to be connected with the farming of the estate when let out to a lay farmer in 1379. The unusually prominent porches are c.1500 additions. It remains unaltered in its internal structure and since 1958 has housed the Agricultural Museum of Wye College. (2,3) 14/2 Grade II Court Lodge. On the map called Court Lodge Farm. L-shaped timber-framed building with some timbering and red brick infilling exposed in the north-east wall, but refronted in 1914 with tile hanging. The first floor of the southernmost west bay of the southwest wing oversails on brackets with a hip over. The 2 first floor windows to the north east of this are gabled dormers. The north west face of the north-west wing is faced with tarred weather-boarding and has an oversailing gable. Tiled roof. Some case windows, some sash windows with gl. bars intact. 2s. 3w. The north-east front has a chimney breast and 1w. of 2 tiers of 5 lights with wooden mullions and transoms. The interior has a kingpost roof. 14/2A Grade III Barn at Court Lodge. To the north-west of the house. Long building faced with tarred weather-boarding on a base of red brick and stone rubble. Hipped tiled roof. (4) Court Lodge, the excellent group of farm buildings south of the church, includes a large timber aisled barn, high-walled and deep roofed. (5) Court Lodge (listed Grade II*). [Full archaeological description] and Barn at Court Lodge (listed Grade I). [Full archaeological description]. (6)
