Monument record TQ 76 NE 39 - Site of five Deneholes near Fort Darland, Chatham Hill

Summary

Five deneholes were discovered in 1895 outside Fort Darland, Chatham Hill. Two were on the north side of the road from Star Mill to Darland Hill, and the others were on the opposite side of the road. The holes were c. 12m deep and 13m in diameter; there were 2 chambers c. 4.5m deep cut into the north and east sides. A large quantity of flints were left after the chalk was removed.
