Monument record TQ 76 NE 42 - Romano-British pottery, found in Gillingham

Summary

2nd/3rd cent Romano-British pottery and charcoal remains; identified during the digging of an anti-tank ditch in 1942. Interpreted as the remains of a temporary Romano-British occupation site. The pottery was taken to Gillingham Museum, but this has since been demolished and the exhibits dispersed.

Full Description

[TQ 7871 6709] . An anti-tank ditch, dug in 1942 was seen by Rhodes to cross an area showing signs of temporary R.B. occupation. Potsherds of 2nd/3rd c. date and charcoal were recovered. The site was pointed out on the ground by Rhodes and the pottery, a few sherds only, was seen in Gillingham Museum. (1) Gillingham Museum has been demolished and the exhibits dispersed. (2)
