TQ 5813 5714] Roman pottery, gold coin, etc., found A.D. 1906 [NAT] (1) Neolithic flint flakes, cores, etc., were found during the excavation of a swimming pool at Patchgrove in 1906. Overlying this, water laid in redeposited clay, fragments of Roman and pre-Roman pottery were found. A gold coin of Trajan was also found. Immediately south east, at the foot of the north-westerly slopes of Oldbury Hill, were found (during the excavation of the hillfort [TQ 55 NE 21]), traces of a settlement characterised by pottery which "was undoubtedly pre-Roman in character, but in point of time it might equally well belong to the years immediately following the conquest". [Patchgrove ware.] (4) At one point "the earlier deposits were sealed by a rough metalling associated with second century Roman pottery". Fragments of Roman brick were also found. A plan of the work done is in Maidstone Museum. (2-5) The site of the settlement could not be determined either from the plan above or from the ground, where a search of the area around the N.W. slopes of Oldbury and the now disused swimming pool revealed nothing of significance. The present whereabouts of the various finds is not known. (6) [TQ 578 593 (approximately)] Patch Grove, Ightham. Possible farmstead, area of burning and course pottery. (7)
