House. Mid C17 and mid C18. Red brick, in irregular bond to rear wing, with plain tiled roof. Regular C18 entrance block to truncated C17 (and early C19 range) at rear. Two storeys on plinth with moulded cornice with widely spaced modillions to hipped roof with stacks to rear left and to rear right. Regular fenestration of 5 glazing bar sashes on first floor and 4 on ground floor with gauged heads. Central door of 6 panels with pilastered doorcase with pediment, a good quality mid C20 replacement of C19 cast iron flat hood, now at Vigo Farmhouse (item 4/78 ). Blank window space on upper left return, the sash below preserving early C18 thick glazing bars. Rear wing with 2 sashes to each floor on left return elevation, irregular fenestration to rear. Interior: the rear (kitchen wings) preserve chamfered beams, inglenook and strap hinge doors of C17 building (c.1640) for the Wood family, although with possible earlier timber framed origin. The C18 wing joins the older range somewhat awkwardly particularly on the upper floor. Main reception and bedrooms with panelling, that to left of entrance hall particularly fine, with raised and fielded panelling, modillion cornice, broken pedimented overmantel and cornices over doors. Simpler dado panelling elsewhere, with lugged and pulvinated fire surrounds, and keyed semi-circular headed side cupboards. Fine stair along 2 sides of entrance hall, with wreathed and ramped moulded handrail on long turned balusters on carved open string brackets, with fluted columned newels. Dado panelling with fluted pilasters echoing newel posts. Some excellent limited restoration work c. 1950 by Arthur Cotton of Hythe (as also with the garden walls and gates). Attached to the west of the house a short length of wall some 4 feet high and returned south along the road, with a mounting block of 5 steps (stone blocks on brick). The adjacent curving gateway ensemble is mid C20 by Arthur Cotton of Hythe, in well detailed matching style.
