Summary

Four early-medieval button brooches found in a grave on Chatham Lines. Also a large iron buckle with tinned bronze plate plus 2 small square-headed brooches, 2 small bronze buckles, a silver spoon, pottery, coins and other finds. These finds are all in the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford.

Full Description

[TQ 75 67 sited to Chatham only] 4 AS button brooches: (i) No.9.4 diameter 19.5mm, very corroded iron pin has survived. Punch marks around the inner parts of the rim. (ii) No.9.3 diameter 19.8mm. Pin missing but slight traces of iron on back. Gilding rather tarnished. Small perforation just inside the rim. (iii) No.9.2 from Grave II, Chatham Lines. Large iron buckle with tinned bronze plate plus 2 small square-headed brooches, 2 small bronze buckles, silver spoon, pottery, coins and other finds. Diameter 17.6mm; iron remains around hinge lung. (iv) No.9.1 - pair with 9.2, diameter 17.7mm. Iron spring and pin corroded but complete punch mark decoration around rim. All finds are in Ashmolean Museum, Oxford. (1)
