Full Description
(TQ 594568) Roman remains found A.D. 1852 (NAT) (1) Foundations of Roman buildings, samian and black ware and many, perhaps some hundreds Roman third brass coins are said to have been found, previous to 1859, mostly c. 1840, a few yards south of Ightham Churchyard. In 1852 and 1893, three archways of tiles, 18ft and 7 ft apart respectively, the last about 3 ft smaller than the other two, were exposed between the church and the Town House. They formed part of a continuious passage, drain or flue, probable the latter, as they bore evidence of intense heat. G. Payne thought the structure was medieval but B. Harrison's sketch does not look so. Coins, but no pottery, were found. (2) This field, formerly an ornamental garden, is now a nursery. No trace of foundation remains but there is a slight scatter of medieval and later tile at TQ 59515686. (3)
