Monument record TQ 76 NW 21 - Roman burials and associated grave goods, Borstal

Summary

Three Roman burials found in chalk-cut cists c.1895. Discovered by convicts digging post holes for a fence between the south wall of Borstal Prison and the Borstal Fort railway. The skeletons were all differently orientated with the heads to the west, north east and south west. Grave goods were found in two of the burials and included, a small brown urn and black patera, a small brown vase, two iron nails and fragments of wood indicating this was once a coffin burial.
