Findspot record TQ 76 NW 33 - Unidentified iron object, possibly Roman, Cuxton

Summary

An egg shaped iron object was reportedly found in the 19th century embedded in clay. It was formed of an iron ring or belt with hemispherical pieces at each end. It was also said to have been covered with a series of belts of different widths, and ornamented with patterns and scroll-work. There was also evidence that it had originally been inlaid with copper foil and possibly also a thin layer of gold (gilt). At the time of its discovery it was thought that the artefact showed evidence of Roman workmanship, although a precise dating for the object is uncertain. The artefact was exhibited at the Society of Antiquaries in 1887 and is now thought to be held by the British Museum.
