The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. 5272 CHARING HIGH STREET (east side) Nos 38 to 42 (even) TQ 9549 22/19 II GV 2. C18. Two storeys painted brick. Hipped tiled roof with 2 dormers and large brick chimney stack, modillion eaves cornice. No 42 has a separate hip and was probably added at a later date. Two cambered sashes with glazing bars intact and one blank. Later window to No 42. Ground floor has 2 C19 shop- fronts and No 40 has a simple doorcase.

The house has three main bays along the street front, two to the south, of two storeys and attic. The facade is in Flemish bond and dated to the mid 18th century. It is likely that it dates the main range although the wing could be earlier.
