Monument record TQ 76 NW 43 - Early medieval burial, Charles Drive, Cuxton

Summary

An early medieval (Saxon) grave was found in 1859 during work to cut the railway between Strood and Cuxton. A rich assemblage of grave goods were found in the burial including a spearhead and ferrule, a knife, a bronze buckle, a shield boss, an urn of Kentish type and an angon. These artefacts are now in the British Museum and the bones are in the Royal College of Surgeons. The site lies on a terrace with a gentle east facing slope, on the western side of the Medway Valley. OD 5m.
