Full Description

[TQ 70506612] Grave[OE] (Site of) (1) Early Neolithic interment found during quarrying operations in 1907 inTrechman's chalk pit at Cuxton. The grave had been made by a slight excavation in the overlying scarp drift. The body had been covered by a layer of flints 12" to 18" thick. A surprising feature was the large number of shells, of no less than 31 species, found in the layer of stones. (2) Site supplied on 1:2,500 Field Trace Kent 19/9/2 from information from Mr. G. Hutchings. (3) Although claimed to be Neolithic, it is safer to leave the age of this grave open. Mr. G. Hutchings says "The site is as marked on the 6" map of J.H. Evans, to whom the exact spot was pointed out by A.S. Kennard. (4) No further information. The site lies in a disused chalk quarry. (5)
