Said to be of the same date as the Almshouses adjoining (1570) but on the outside the only part visible that dates from that period is the crow-stepped gable in the west front. 2 storeys red brick. Tiled roof and parapet with stone coping. The front dates from the C18 and consists of a bay of 3 windows with glazing bars intact. Side elevation has 2 sashes. Doorcase with reeded frame.
Ye Olde Beverlie Inn and Nos 1 to 6 (consec) Marwood`s Hospital form a group.

The Canterbury UAD states;
Manwood Trustees/Tomson & Wotton/Whitbread.

This inn probably opened in the 16th century. A short article in the Evening Standard on 18th August 1954 stated:

'Ye Olde Beverlie was for years administered by the Sir Roger Manwood Trust. Because of its association it had a six day licence for many years. It probably opened in the 16th century and is now being taken over by a brewery'.

The Kent Herald on 11th August 1954 wrote that The Olde Beverlie 'Was handed over by Senior Vesturer at Canterbury Cathedral and licensee for the past 13 years. Mr William E C Wood is then, the last landlord to combine the duties of host with those of Parish Clerk, Sexton of the church and Prior of Sir Roger Manwood Almhouses. It is now being taken over, on lease by Tomson and Wotton Ltd'.

I have read that Ye Olde Beverlie had associations with the early days of Kent County Cricket and it was certainly popular for itsBat and Trp green in the grounds of the pub.

In 1838 it was listed in the Kent Directory as the Beverly Arms. (1)
