The following text is from the original listed building designation:

1. 5273 HERNE STREET (East Side) Herne
Nos 1 to 4 (consec) TR 1865 NW 4/61 29. 9.51. (Smugglers Cottages)

2. 4 cottages forming a curve with rounded corner. 2 storeys 6 windows. Nos 1 and 2 are C16 timber-framd cottages with the 1st floor overhanging on curved brackets. Ground floor to No 1 is now roughcast and No 2 is brick with 2 late C18 or early C19 curved shop windows complete with glazing bars, 1st floor plastered with 4 sliding sashes to the 1st floor. Nos 3 and 4 are probably C17 and are of 2 storeys brick with stringcourse. Modern casement windows. Tiled roofs with brick chimneystack in the angle between Nos 2 and 3. Nos 1 and 2 have inglenook fireplaces. 'Historic Building of Kent' plaque.
Nos 1 to 4 Smugglers Cottages form a group with Globe Cottage and Chestnut Cottage.
