Full Description
Description from record TR 15 NE 188:
[TR 15005780] PH (NAT). (1) No 5 Butchery Lane, Shakespeare Inn, Grade II. Medieval and later. (2-3)
The Canterbury UAD states that this is a Shepherd Neame House inn.
This inn was on the Licensing List in 1792 and the innkeeper was George Lacey.
In the 1867 the Directory listed the inn as a Tavern and Billiard Room with William Field as the innkeeper.
Popular innkeepers for many years were Mr & Mrs Ignatius Dempsey who, with their companion and helper Miss Peggy Blake who died in 1972, always had a cheerful welcome. Now (2002) it is still a public house but its name has been changed to 'Caseys'.
The ground floor and basement was subject to a historic building survey in 2013 in advance of alterations. Although the rear of the building confirmed the medieval date the interiors were so heavily remodelled that no historic fabric could be seen.(4)
