Listed Building record TR 25 NW 313 - C14th BARN AT LITTLEBOURNE COURT

Summary

Grade I listed building. Main construction periods 1300 to 1332 Believed build as a Tithe Barn for St. Augustine's Abbey Possible under instruction of Salamon of Ripple a monk who was the warden for Littlebourne and a number of other parishes. The medieval core of the building has remained largely unaltered whilst further elements of the original framing have survived in the rear south-east aisle wall and north-west terminal bay. Archaic features used in this primary fabric, such as the splayed and keyed scarfs, spandrals and dragon ties, all suggest a date during the first half of the 14th century. Acomprehensive set of carpenter's marks show te lose of one and ahalf bays from the south-western end of the barn. Although no direct evidence for the original entrances remains, the positions of two early openings suggest that the 14th century barn was entered through two doors, symmetrically placed about the two central bays. Unfortunately the original roof structure does not survive. The presetn crown-post roof, which probably dates from the 15th century, is clearly a replacement.. Several details observed, in particular the free tenons atop three of the principle posts, suggest that the building may have been dismantled and then reassembled on the present site.
