Description from record TR 15 NE 883:
By mid May 1940 the 9th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, moving to the environs of Canterbury ‘to defeat any hostile attempt to land by sea or air’, had established headquarters at the George and Dragon public house, beside Fordwich Bridge. The battalion moved on at end of the month but it seems likely the building remained in military (perhaps Home Guard?) use, as a fortified house covering Fordwich Bridge immediately to the north. It was probably fortified house No. 11 (Military Grid Reference R 620779) in a list of such structures made 2 December 1940.

Monitoring of alterations to the public house revealed that it was formed from three independent timber-framed buildings(1)
