Summary

A Saxon and a Norman Mint were previously located in Rochester. The first coins from Rochester date from the 7th century and by 928 it was the fourth largest mint in England. Production became very irregular after conquest and the first Norman coins date from around 1068. Rochester produced the first issue of Henry I and production continued until after 1158, making it one of just two in Kent alongside Canterbury.

Full Description

A Saxon and A Norman Mint were previously located at an unknown location in Rochester. The first coins from Rochester date from the 7th century and it was the fourth largest mint in England in 928, showing the imporatance of this city in Saxon times. However, production became very irregular after the conquest. The first Norman coins date from around 1068, and again from 1086 until 1098. Rochester produced the first issue of Henry I. It was the only Kent mint to operate after 1158 apart from that at Canterbury. (1) Additional bibliography. (2)
