[TR 15365770] Bailey House [NAT]. (1) Warden's Residence [NR]. (2) No 1 Monastery Street, Bailey House. Grade II. 18th century facade to possibly earlier house refaced with cement. (For full description see list). (3) The Cemetery Gate (TR 15 NE 222) remained a private house during the 19th century. In 1908 it was adapted for use by students and named Bailey House after Henry Bailey, Warden of St Augustine's College 1850-78. (4)

2. C18 facade to possibly earlier house refaced with cement. 2 storeys, Eaves cornice. 4 windows, one pointed, the others retaining their glazing bars. The south front is faced partly with cement, partly with flints, partly with red brick and partly with tiles. Corbled chimney above the ground floor. In this wall is a stone recording "Sir John Hales, Baranet, gave this water and at his own charge had it brought hither, 1733".
No 1, wall adjoining No 1 to right, water pump opposite No 1, No 2, Nos 4 to 16 (even), St Augustine's College, Hall, Chapel, The Cemetery Gateway, The Great Gateway, wall in front of St Augustine's form a group.

Description from record TR 15 NE 793:
In August 1940 the Canterbury Emergency Committee were offered free of charge the use of the cellar of Bailey House at the Longport end of Monastery Road, in place of an existing post (‘C/1’) constructed of sandbags in Longport Street. The offer was gratefully accepted. Around the end of December 1940 sleeping accommodation was provided.
