Monument record TQ 76 NW 133 - Romano-British and medieval features, Old Corn Exchange, Rochester

Summary

Excavations in the Old Corn Exchange in 1961 revealed a series of floor surfaces containing stratified Roman occupation material and two post holes. The medieval remains included two rooms connected by a corridor and three steps. Part of a green-glazed jug, a fragment of a glass bowl or bottle, an iron adze-head, and almost all the fragments of a jug of polychrome ware, were found in the fill of a latrine pit. The artefacts were dated to the period around c.1300 AD. The building was therefore at least of thirteenth century date and cannot be earlier than c.1100 AD.
