2. Late C18. 2 storeys red brick. Parapet with stone coping. Mansard roof having 3 dormers. 3 sashes filth glazing bars intact. These are 3-light on the ground floor. Central round-headed recessed doorcase with later door. The keystone has a moulded female bust. No 13 is part of this building.
Nos 11 to 18 (consec) form a group.

The Canterbury UAD states that this was a Mackeson/Whitbread inn.

There was an inn the Mitre mentioned in the Quarter Sessions List in 1692 but there is some doubt about its position in Canterbury. The Friars Mitre was mentioned in the Licensing Lists of 1845 and 1846 and it was one of the very few inns to carry a sign with connections with the Cathedral. Mary Robins was the innkeeper in November 1878.

The Mitre changed to The Canterbury Tales in November 1981. It is situtaed conveniently opposite the Marlowe Theatre.
