The Canterbury UAD states that this is a Rigden/Fremlin/Whitbread inn.

Formerly the Dog and Bull and it was called that in 1796 when the licensee was James Moss. In September 1798 HRH George, Prince of Wales, was presented with the Freedom of the City of Canterbury and the inn probably changed its name to Prince of Wales at that time. In 1795 the Prince of Wales had married Caroline of Brunswick and when he was crowned as George IV in 1820 he was determined to prevent her becoming Queen and attempted to prevent her entering Westminster Abbey. The mob cheered her on but she was prevented from entering. An amusing verse of the time said:
O Gracious Queen we thee implore,
To go away and sin no more;
But if that effort be too great,
To go away at any rate.

Caroline died a month after the coronation of George IV.

In 1849 the Prince of Wales was purchased by Rigdens from Flints for £510.

The establishment is now (2003) Merefields Wine bar.
