The Canterbury UAD states that this inn previously belonged to George Beer/Rigden/Fremlin/Whitbread.

In 1728 an inn was built near the Toll gate and so called Sign of the Gate. The innkeeper was Richard Howard who was licensed to sell ales only. He also collected tolls and was a trained chandler. A Rigdens Rent Book in the early 19th century refers to The Turnpike House and the innkeeper paid: Year's Rent £8.00 and Property Tax £1. 15. 7.

Apparently in 1848 the innkeeper was Richrd Wood, a pig breeder, who erected a piggery close to the Gate. The Rent Book in 1803 states that the Gate Inn 'is sited in Bridge Road'. The type of client was listed in the Cathedral Licensing Planning Committee's Report as 'residents and road users'.
