Description from record TR 15 NE 812:
By mid September 1941, probably as part of the strengthening of the Canterbury Fortress, a fortified house had been established in a building on the west side of Northgate with a clear line of fire down Broad Street. The building in question certainly survives, although it is not yet clear which one it was - most probably number 70, which is dead opposite. It was on the Inner Perimeter of the Canterbury Fortress, which here coincided with the west side of Northgate. There was a roadblock, on the said perimeter, immediately in front of this building.

The Canterbury UAD states that No 71 Northgate was a Flint & Sons inn.
The Victoria was empty c. 1968 when inspected and has since been converted into several flats and the owner of the front ground floor flat has retained the bars as part of the kitchen - a pleasant act of conversation. It was a large inn and hotel, was listed in the Licensing list of 1692 as The Plume of Feathers, and the Billeting List of 1693 listed the inn for 8 soldiers.
In 1839 the innkeeper was James Curtis and in 1855 the inn was also acting as a Wine & Spirit outlet.
The building is probably listed.
The Victoria ceased trading and closed in 1966.
