The Canterbury UAD states that No 91 Northgate was a Beer & Rigden/Fremlins inn.

This inn was called Carpenters Arms when Rigdens purchased it in 1802 for £450. In 1820 this inn was changed from The Prince Regent to the Spread Eagle and was licesed as such in 1846 with the innkeeper as Elizabeth Bannister.

In 1846 a Constable's report spoke of disorderly conduct at the inn and another report of disorderly conduct appeared in 1863. The document in the archives reads:
City of Canterbury Police Station 14th June 1863

PC Twyman reports 'the Spread Eagle Public House, Northgate, open at 12.50 am and several persons in the bar drinking'. S. Spratt, Inspector of Police.

Because of the bad reputation Mr W E and Mr J Rigden took over control of the Spread Eagle and re-named it The Two Brothers in 1872.

In 1965 the City Council opposed a move to demolish the Two Brothers for an extesion to the adjoining Post Office garages. The inn ceased trading over twenty years ago in 1966 and is still empty (1988). Now (2002) it is a Centre for Health Educatuion and Research.
