Grade II* listed building. Main construction periods 1066 to 1799 St mary northgate hall : listed building. Iron Age coin findspot 48 Palace St: Late 18th century two storey house built in red brick. The rear elevation has a medieval portion which was the porch to the original Archbishop's Palace. This is of two storeys and built in flint and ashlar.

Full Description

The following text is from the original listed building designation:
1. 944 PALACE STREET (East Side)
No 48 (Walpole House, King's School) TR 1458 SE 2/51 TR 1458 SE 3/51 3.12.49.

2. Late C18. 3 storeys and semi-basement red brick. Parapet with stone coping. stuccoed stringcourse. Northernmost window bay recessed with arcading over lst floor windows. Doorway up 5 steps with handrail on either side. Narrow window on either side of door, segmental fanlight, reeded frieze, and 6 panel moulded double doors. Footscraper. The rear elevation has a mediaeval portion which is the porch to the original Archbishop's Palace. 2 storeys flint and ashlar with buttresses. Sashes. Blocked in arch, The rest of the building has a curved bay and 3 sashes. Doorcase with rectangular fanlight and steps with wrought iron railings.
Nos 29 to 48 (consec) form a group.
