2. A late C15 building altered in C19. 3 storeys painted brick. Old tiled roof with 2 dormers. Wide wooden bracket cornice. 3 C19 sashes with Regency blinds on 2nd floor, 3 C18 sashes with glazing bars intact on 1st floor. Ground floor has modern shop front and left side doorcase with rectangular fanlight and 6 fielded panelled door.
Nos 3 & 4 form a group.

The Canterbury UAD states that this is an Inde Coope inn.

The address is interesting because the Olive Branch is actually in the Butter Market. There was a passage way through to The Parade where there was another licensed house and they were both held by one licensee.

No. 39 Burgate Street is mentioned in Directories from 1878 when T H Walkley & Co., Wine and spirit merchants were listed as 4, The Parade and 39 Butter Market. That was repeated in a Directory in 1889.

In 1904 Pike's Blue Book lists Walkley & Co. Wine and beer merchants at 39 Burgate with Black Boy inn at No. 40 Burgate Street. In 1925 only Walkley & Co. is mentioned but in the 1927 Directory the entry is Olive Branch with Walkley & Co. at No. 39 Burgate Street.

For years the Olive Branch only had a six day licence because of its proximity to the Cathedral. When it was granted a seven day licence there was much opposition from church goers. Why is the passage way between the Olive Branch and The Parade now closed?
