Full Description
Description from record TR 15 NW 247:
TR 147581 (sic). Warehouse on the North West side of Pound Land. (1) (TR 14665816 - sited from HHR map). Wool Stores, South West of No 6 Pound Lane. Dates from the 16thc or 17thc. The right side is of flint and robbed medieval masonry with stone dressings. Grade II. (For full description see list). (2) Additional bibliography. (3)
An intermittent watching brief and minor excavations were carried out in December, 1991 and January, 1992 during renovation and rebuilding work at the Woolstore, Pound Lane. This watching brief was funded by Canterbury City Council and the site codes were PL91 and PLB91. The earliest archaeological feature found was the Medieval city wall. This was located in the eastern end of the watching brief trench, the area exposed being 2m by 2m and 0.6m in height. The eastern face of the wall had been reused as the foundation of the main east wall of the woolstore. Abutting the city wall were deposits of silt, these were not excavated and no finds were recovered from the event. In the southern area of the excavation a retaining wall was uncovered, possibly a section of a 19th century loading bay for use with goods from barges. A cobbled surface abutted the wall and the city wall sloping to west, presumably to allow drainage in the event of flooding. The main south wall was also built upon the Medieval city wall. This current south wall dates from the 1830's when the building was lengthened. The excavation and watching brief clearly confined the development of the woolstore as early 19th century. <ref 215> (4)
