Full Description

Description from record TR 15 NW 388:
Nos 11, 12, 12A and 13 St Dunstan's Street [TR14535814 sited from OS 1/1250 1971]. Grade II. Timber framed building, refaced in the 18th century, not uniform. (1) Nos 11, 12, 12A St Dunstan's Street. Two timber framed ranges of two storeys. Altered 18th to 19th centuries. No 13 St Dunstan's Street. Medieval timber framed building. (2) 11-13 St Dunstan's Street is one continuous two storey range; from its height and deep first floor jetties a date of the 16th century or earlier can be inferred. (3)

The Canterbury UAD states that No. 13 St Dunstan's Street was previous an inn owned by Shepherd Neame House.

The George and Dragon was listed in the 1692 Licensing Lists as the George and the following year was in the Billeting List for 4 soldiers. It was obviously an old building and there is evidence of part of the inn being converted from two old cottages.

In 1838 the innkeeper was Silas Ambrose Bodkin.

The George and Dragon was closed in 1969, the building was then completely renovated and the Magistrates Court was notified of change of name in 1969. This was approved and it was opened as The Bishops Finger in May 1970. The renovation cost between £10,000 to £15,000. (4)
