The Canterbury UAD states that No. 29 St Margaret's Street used to be the Victoria Wine shop during the 1980's. It was also an inn for several centuries. In 1761 the Kentish Post refers to 'The Vine, near the fish market' and a few years later there was an advertisement for a function at the sign of the Vine near the fish market by Elias Webb.
The Vine was on the Ebblewhite List in 1692. Mr Ebblewhite published a letter in the Kentish gazette in 1895 listing all inns and taverns in the City of Canterbury on 21st November 1692. This was an important list because if an inn was not on the list it was not licensed. The Woolen Drapers Company held a feast there in 1729 - 'against The Vine next the fish market'.
During the post-war years the building was the Pilgrim's Bookshop for some time, owned by Mr and Mrs N A Rae. The building is still more elegant than many in Canterbury although in 1992 it had little connection with beer or wine or spirits. It is now a jewellery shop.
